Three major things I've learned about writing after 9 months of motherhood✨

1. How to write on the go 📝
Voice-to-text dictating into my notes app is my current go-to for getting my thoughts onto the page. My new busy schedule means adapting to stay productive!

2. How to balance work with rest 😴
This is something I may never get down totally, my first instinct as soon as I get my girl down for her nap is to pull out my laptop and get to work. However, I've been learning the importance of rest. I cannot be an effective mother or author if my cup is always empty!

3. How to put my writing away 👀
Nothing is more important than being present in the moment -- not even the manuscript currently burning a hole in my laptop!

I've always been someone who will burrow down in front of my laptop and spend 6 straight hours working without looking up. It was hard to let that tendency go, at first, but these days I don't think twice about it!

I'm loving this new stage of life and don't want to miss a second of it!🥰

🍁Review: The Wrong Kind of Falling by Whitney Amazeen🍂

This book was such a fun and sweet read with a genuinely unique set of characters! (I don't think I've ever seen a book with an MMA fighter and a dog groomer falling in love😜) as well as a full, lovable cast of side characters and townsfolk.

It was a perfect read to both thoroughly entertain and get me in the fall-pumpkin-spice-make-a-soup kind of mood!☕️

Bash and Romilly's romance was sweet and meaningful all the way through, and a delight to read. The romance was clean and yet still full of plenty of emotions and Will-they-won't-they tension to keep me hooked.

Plus, can we get a little commotion for the cover?🤩

I love that this book is unabashedly Christian, and shows us two characters in very different walks!

(Mild spoilers beyond this point!)

Throughout this story, Bash is navigating his way back into church after a negative past experience, and it's so refreshing to see a character in a Christian book that doesn't start out with everything put together and figured out. I love the way this parallels Romilly's journey back to trusting herself to be in a relationship.

Here’s the secret flexing your writing muscles: Poetry! 📝

I hear you saying "Halli, I'm a fiction writer, not a poet!"

Hear me out!👀

For years now I’ve kept a small journal that I constantly use to jot down every bit of poetic inspiration I encounter—this poetry never even needs to see the light of day if you don’t want it to, it exists simply as a daily exercise!

Practicing through poetry can help you hone these five descriptive skills fiction and non-fiction writing:

1. Expanding your illustrative vocabulary—focus on playing with language, and I don’t mean chewing up and spitting out a thesaurus! Read read read and search up definitions when you encounter new words. Keep a list of words that strike you, and find new ways to work those into your writing as an exercise for your vocabulary.

2. Practicing metaphor and symbolism—focus on using different types of figurative and illustrative language in a no judgement zone, learn what works best for you through trying it on the page!

3. Training your imagination—focus on sitting in a quiet moment, and let your brain work without any outside stimulation. What can you really come up with when working on your own? Jot it down!

4. Finding new ways to describe old things—focus on avoiding cliches and working your way around the expected. Ignore your brain’s first impulse, and the second, and the third. Without relying on cliches and standard language, how will you get the picture on the page?

5. Writing without adjectives and adverbs--this one may be tricky, can you describe a scene without them? These words can become an illustrative crutch we use that ends up allowing us to use weak nouns and verbs, overall dulling the resulting prose. Practice writing without using a single one!

Using poetry as descriptive practice is a great way to find your narrative voice and develop your prose!

📚He let me flip through a few of his pages, and I don’t want to put this book down. No, he’s a book that may keep me up all day and all night.📚

I have an 8 month old baby, and this book still managed to be the main thing keeping me up all night!

Not A Fan is a real enemies to love with a great slow burn, carefully crafted plot, and super lovable characters that you can't help but root for. Shelbey Kendall has created such a lovely cast in this book that even the side characters shine. At about 50% I was unsure how Kendall would make the switch from cutting wit and sarcastic banter to a romance that felt like a natural progression, and not three chapters later was I on the edge of my seat, rooting for a kiss!

This book was fantastic and definitely my favorite clean romance read yet!

📚He let me flip through a few of his pages, and I don’t want to put this book down. No, he’s a book that may keep me up all day and all night.📚

I have an 8 month old baby, and this book still managed to be the main thing keeping me up all night!

New River Gorge(ous) is a sweet, funny, character driven romcom. I'm so glad to have received an ARC of this book, as it helped me out of a long reading slump!

Brooke and Beckett have great chemistry, and the quirky cast of characters really carry this story well. It's not an overly plot heavy story, but it's full of sweet moments and humor. I personally thought Meemaw June stole the show!

The story is at its best in act 3, and (without spoiling anything😋) the white water rafting scenes were so much fun.
